I like the warmness in the winter!! I'm right beside a window with a nice view, but with the awesome single-pane glass technology here it gets damn cold in the winter!

In the summer though I'm constantly arguing with the accounting manager about the temperature. Every time I turn around she's turning the damn aircon off! Hag. I blew up at her last summer though, really lost it... She doesn't touch the controls for my department anymore!

I think Hong Kong is worse, but in the opposite way. Every office building and restaurant I have been in there is always *WAY* too cold. In the summer they crank the aircons up as much as possible, in the winter they don't seem to bother with heat. By the time I get through an hour meeting I'm turning blue. :(

Japanese construction industy's mission: SUFFERING

Without proper ducting, vents, and always-forgotten cold air returns, Japanese heating and cooling systems are a cruel joke. Even when set correctly, variation in temps are HUGE in all Japanese offices because of the Japanese construction industy's mission to make all Japanese suffer.

As far as Japanese being cold all the time, many Japanese have low blood pressure and low body mass which combines to prone to "chills"...But basically, being "chilled" is a psychosomatic problem for Japanese folks who think the keeping their "hara" warmed is the key to good health, sheesh.

I've never been able to figure that one out. Is there some reason for this besides just being an "old wives tale"...?

Heh, maybe we should add that to the You've Been In Japan Too Long When... thread: "You've been in Japan too long when you believe that you'll fall ill if your guts get cold."

Could it be the asian belief that one's "ki" comes from their belly button....

Guess every country/region/religion has weird quirks. Millions of Christians just celebrated Christ's birth -- in the wrong month.

I'd heard something like that before. I'm guessing that the early church fathers celebrated it in December to coincide with Roman Winter Solstice so they could witness to them easier. Correct me if I'm wrong.

yeah this is a REAL PISS OFF in japan.

I dont get.

they are always cold and saying "samui samui" so they crank the heating up to a near vomitting point in offices, trains, buses...but
sit in their house and fucking FREEZE! :?
or they hide under the Kotatsu while the rest of the house(thin-walled concrete bunker with no insulation)is below zero!
8O

The trains are disgusting, you notice even when its not very cold the heat is often cranked right up, the train staff arent allowed to change the temp. from the morning...so if its chilly AM the heat gets cranked up...by the afternoon with sunlight and 100 people per sq. metre...it like a fucking oven!

do you think anyone has the brains to OPEN A FUCKING WINDOW!
No of course not.

and they wonder why they all sleep! they are so sleepy because they are so oxygen starved.

I think Christ was actually born in March, but I could be wrong about the month. The reason for choosing December was due to a pagan winter solstice celebration -- celebrating the return of the sun I believe. I don't know if it was Roman or not...

I am Christian, but I have a very difficult time accepting many parts of what Christianity preaches.

Cuz they're fucking pussies.

Seriously that is one thing that used to piss me off about Japan more than almost anything.

FG Lurker is right about Hong Kong though. I don't I've ever been so cold anywhere in the heat of summer. The worst was going to the movies after getting caught in the rain.

Western-style heated rooms are a relatively modern invention, it dates back to Bavarian architecture of the 17th century. They were the first houses to have a central living room with a stove, closed off with doors so the heat wouldn't escape. Some of the Amish houses around here still use that old design, with a pot-bellied stove and everything.

Recent? Compared to what, the wheel?

In case you missed a few centuries, we're in the 21st century now. A major advancement in housing that happened ~350 years ago does not seem particularly recent.

He'll probably claim to have invented the wheel... Hell he claims to know everything about everything and have done everything before anyone else.

Summary: Chuck's a prick.

Christ was supposedly born in April, coinciding with the celestial events recorded by the Chinese (star of Bethlehem).

The Roman Emperor Constantine, who embraced Christianity as a political tool, decreed that the popular pagan holiday of December 25th would be celebrated as Christ's birthday as a way of instituting Christianity through the empire. more...

Compared to Japanese architecture, which likes to pretend it's still in the Heian era.

Wow Chuck, that's pretty cool! The Japanese had electric heat & lights, multi-story buildings with elevators, and even simpler things like glass windows, all back in Heian era? No shit! Man, you really do know everything.

It is so damn hot that if feels like a furnance..I cannnot concentrate and complain, to no avail. There are two japanese,( by the way, the women are the worst.) and the rest are from India.

I have to also deal with it here with my mom who is Japanese. She is always cold and I am always hot! Not sure why. Maybe something is wrong with me?!?!?!
