I miss lots of Japanese food. This is my fave subject, I love cooking as well.

1. a big plate of chu toro with wasabi
2. big fresh Japanese pears (they call them asian pears, but they are best grown in Japan)
3. Ramen in a real ramen-ya
4. chahan- I could never get the flavor right....wih gyoza and soup
5. kobe beef
6. royal milk tea, coffee milk.....regular j milk...miss that flavor
7. Choco Flake
8. okonomiyaki and Takoyaki in Shimokitazawa
9. Oden with tako, daikon, potatos
10. Really good japanese rice...the kind you can eat by itself it is so tasty
11. Fresh Japanese shoku pan
12. An pan, niku man (OOHHH I miss great niku man)
13. The roasted chestnuts they sale on the streets or at train stations
14. Yaki nuku and the spice cucumbers
15. Fresh sake (salmon).....they sale the sake in a jar (fresh) and you can just poor it on your rice or eat it out of the jar.
16. MISS- obento ya......you can get sake onigiri, my fave
17. Toraya's- mizu Yokan, Monaka and Manju (they have a shop in NY. I need to fly out there sometime soon)
18. Japanese strawberry short cake...atually any type of pastry...they are delicate and not too sweet...shu creme puff
19. Fujiya's (Peko Chan), milk candy. anmitsu
20. Chayan mushi
21. Forgot the name, but they have stores near Kawasaki Daiichi....it is like a jelly ( I think a type of mochi) but it is not white and thick like mochi. You sprinkle a brown/beige colored powder on top and then load on top a thick syrup (brown sugar based syrup I think) To die for.
22. Okyako don, tonkatsu, Nihon soba, Tempura soba, shrimp TENDON
23. YAKI IMO
24. Eve gum, felix bubble gum
25. Shyabu shyabu, sukiyaki, yaki soba
26. The different coffee's in the can---they have hot and cold vending machines. Georgia coffee was my fave
27. Yokohama Shyumai
28. Menchi katsu, koroke (kare and yasai), ika ringu (going to the supper market and buying them from the counter)
29. all sorts of shinko
30. japanese red wieners.....I think they are a fish base...but they have a red exterior color...

I could liist more, but now I have a massive heaache because I am so hungry for this food.....well, since I basically grew up in Japan, I have a whole laundry list of stuff I miss. Luckily, my relatives can send a big care package from time to time

I suppose the thing I MISS the most is - calling in my order and having it delivered HOT to the house. Man all you get here is pizza. Yeah, I miss the local rest. deliveries....you can order about anything.

I can get almost anything here in Calif, but some of it just isnt the same:
Natto--love that stuff
Miso--mom makes
Rice--mom orders special J rice
and anything half decent from the J stores here. but have to be careful on the expiration dates.

I miss the "Real" Okonomiyaki from Osaka. The "generic" versions we have here in Hawaii are just something to laugh at. Made by Filipinos, Hawaiians, Chinese, and god what have you not. Anyone could follow a recipe from Japan, but to put the Japanese spirit and pride into it just propels the cuisine into a totally different level.

Just my take.

To die for, indeed! Mels if you should ever go to kyoto- byodoin, in front of the entrance is a soba shop and next to it they sell wagashi. get the ones with matcha inside. Incredible. They have some kinpaku sprinkled on the top. THAT's luxury!

Ahh, now that I spoke to my mom, that mochi is call KUZU mochi.

Yes, I use to eat those baby ramen chips. Also, symours (sp?) I thnk they are dried umeboshi that are very salty and sour.

Someone mentioned Yakiniku..yep and also I love the shoyu dango (mitarashi dango).

I suppose in general, I do miss going to the bento store for lunch.

I bought a 'Non-no' Encyclopdia of Basic Japanese Cooking. Although I may not be able to find all the ingredients, I have made koroke (very hard for me...it falls apart), Kinpira gobo etc.

Have any of you prepared a Japanese style bento to take to work? I have many times, but I find that eating Natto does not make me a popular person to eat with..

I actually like natto OK. I don't think I'd go out of my way to head to the Japanese supermarket and buy it but I definitely jump at the chance to eat it when I see it at a Japanese person's house.

I heard about an FG who used to buy up all the natto on sale at the end of the day at his local supermarket. He got a kick out of everyone saying "sugoiii" at the till. When he got home, he would immediately throw it all away.
I'm guessing this is before they had TVs for entertainment.

I live in San Francisco (large Japanese community and restaurants and supermarkets) and brought my own personal Japanese chef home with me when I moved back to California, so I can't think of anything I don't regularly eat now that I enjoyed in Japan.

You guys realize that this whole food topic is very Japanese. Beyond F-ed. Next someone is going to start a thread about what special food you ate on your winter vacation...

Yeah, isnt it great being beyond F**ed.

In Sacramento, we have limited Japanese food. I do go to J town whenever I get a chance to buy items I cant get here. So that is cool.

Talking about Natto, that jerk that bought all the natto and then threw them away....well it was on his dime. Asshole.

I would go out of my way to buy my natto. I love just eating is straight without any rice.

Peace out

There's very little Japanese food that I miss here in Orange County, California, as I can literally get almost anything I want around here. There are two large Japanese super markets within 6 miles of me, and my wife is a wonderful cook! yakiniku, tonkatsu, udon, tenpura, I can even get an-donuts and curry pan baked fresh daily. Ishii-Yaki-imo and tako-yaki are even cooked up in front of the supers on many days.

Sorry to brag, but I'm so happy that I'm living in the best of both worlds right now. :P

There's an asian store with lots of Japanese imports nearby, so I can get a fix on some foods here. But I'm dying for a good chicken katsu curry and some miso ramen with a side of gyoza. Inaba Wako's thick-cut roast tonkatsu set was damn good too. My standby was the chicken-vegetable sandwich at Doutor; lots of good reading, journaling, and letter-writing accompanied by that sandwich.

The Japanese restaurants in my area suck. They're typically run by Koreans in kimono and are frequented by artsy people who think they're having a fine-dining experience. I think there are a couple decent restaurants downtown, but I haven't had a chance to check them out.

Roots Coffee

That's about all I miss when in China. I am horribly addicted to that crap. There is pleanty of Japanese food in Beijing if I feel like subjecting myself to the horrors of Japanese food some more, but they put a Chinese touch on it to make most of it good.

Well, I've recently moved about an hour away from civilization, so I no longer have instant access to all of my favorite Japanese goodies. Naturally, I had to bump this thread. Reading over everyone's entries has put me into a near fit of hysteria. I would KILL for a hot bowl of tonkotsu ramen right now.

Just a heads-up for the Yebisu drinkers, I think they have been trying to make a push back into the US market for the last year or two, as they started stocking it a lot in all the various Japanese markets here in the SF Bay area. I'm going to assume you can find it in all Mitsuwa markets across the country. I know we've got quite a few alcoholics on here, so it might be worth the 200+ mile drive for some of you. ;)

The horror of Japanese breakfast

Postby Marked Trail » Wed Dec 30, 2009 7:06 pm

:herring:
I miss nothing.
I dread next month when I have to return to the retched stench of grilled mackerel. Nothin' ruins my day more than reeking yakizakana grilled fish staring up and giving me the stink eye at breakfast accompanied by the Horsemen of the Apocalypse: over-polished white rice, natto, raw egg, estrogen-laden miso soup, and puking-pink pickles.

Not food- but I do miss my beloved shouchu. It's nigh on impossible to get any bottles of decent quality anywhere here in Yurop, so we need to bring it with us and/or rely on the inlaws to send us some.

:(
