I think the chance of getting in any kind of trouble is really small as long as you don't overstay your visa. If you're really nervous about it only do privates that you set up yourself and stay away from anything formal. My advice to just take whatever work you can find and not worry about it. Just see to it that you're paid upfront. You could get your ladyfriend to make up a meishi (Japanese name card) for you. Put your name, keitai (cell phone) number, an email address and 'Native English Speaker' or 'American English' or whatever on it. Get a cell phone with text right away. A lot of people here will be too shy to call but might be willing to send you an email to help you hook up privates. Around where you'll be there's probably heaps of International Centers and places where people go to meet gaijin and practice English so you just post your contact info in those places. Be sure to include stupid phrases like 'friendly English' or 'smile sensei' and 'I love kids'on your little homemade signs. Sounds retarded, I know, but ESL is a is tard battle.
