I'll agree with Samurai_Jerk, and also to an extent AK (on the whole "if I were king" thing ). most of my life I've considered myself a 'black patriot in the US." that is, I've often been ready to join up (marines, army, etc.) and defend the country. but this country has reversed so much of its progress in recent years, I'm not sure anymore. I love America, I just do. But I don't prefer it, and I plan to leave. As for Japan. If I lived there at the time of the fight, sure, I'd fight for them. As for fighting 'against' American, as many problems as I have with my country, I don't think I could do that. I think I'd have to let the Japanese lock me up in jail during the war before I'd fight against my fellow countrymen back in the US.

If I got trapped in Japan, I wouldn't try to join up with the Japanese Army, but would be a lone resistance fighter. Reason, I wouldn't join up with the official army or organized resistance groups is, I'd rather fight on my own terms, than get sent to fight the enemy while the top brass sat on their asses far away from the frontlines. The only one I'd want to be taking commands from is myself.

A quick recap:

1) He intentionally left his unit and crossed into North Korean territory.
2) He claims that he did not intend to actually stay in North Korea but wanted to pass through it into Russia and then back to the States.
3) He claims that NK did not let him leave once he entered.

Any reasonably intelligent person would never defect into NK and expect to be able to leave... But his army intelligence tests showed him to have below average intelligence.

Being forced to live in NK for as long as he had to is more than enough punishment really, IMO. Apparently the army agreed too as he was essentially sentenced to "time served."

Being that stupid is a crime of sorts, but, thankfully, the U.S. military has mercy on its own fools, if not any others. I absolutely adore Sado Ga Shima so I am happy for his daughters who will have a good home and friendly neighbors.

The entire abduction issue makes me sick. How many years did the government in Japan do as little as possible? I can understand the anger and frustration of the families and everybody else, too. Koizumi is not my favorite guy (not a fan of his version of post office reform), but he has done much more than I thought he would in regard to the abduction issue. I think that he deserves some recognition for that, but I may be wrong. What do others know that I don't about this issue?
