Japanese ready to crack open cans of Aussie wine

SYDNEY (Kyodo) Suggest buying wine in a can and most people will balk at the crudity of the idea.
However, talk to officials at Barokes Australia, the winemakers responsible for patenting wine in a can and they will tell you change is in the air.
They will also tell you it is the Japanese, rather than the Australians with their "anything goes" attitude, who are bypassing the wine bottle to crack open the can.
"The Japanese have no preconceived ideas about what a can represents as far as wine quality is concerned," says Greg Stokes, CEO of Barokes in Melbourne, in the state of Victoria.
"They're always ready to try something new, whereas Australians are more snobby. Aussies are used to wine being served in a bottle."
But Barokes believes Australians will eventually come around. After all, if suburban Australia can wholeheartedly embrace wine in a cask, why not wine in a can?
The initial idea for canned wine hit Stokes while he was relaxing in a spa bath enjoying a glass of wine. The wine bottle fell into the bath and almost broke, leaving him with an idea that was quickly thrown into development by himself and winemaker Steve Barics.
It was not easy. Barokes wine in a can took nine years to perfect.

Hey, I like Charles's smart ass know-it-all attitude. I'd much rather hear from a man with conviction than someone who puts "in my opinion" or "that's just what I think" at the end of every statement.

Japan doesn't have a real history of wine drinking, so it might be ignorance instead of a lack of class.

My sincerest apologies. It appears that the wine review mp3 was truncated, and I cannot locate the rest. Let's just call the posted segment a Fair Use excerpt and leave it at that.

I suspect that the canned wine may be a substantial improvement over standard Australian wine packaging.

Wine in a can sounds like it will improve the taste in the same way can improves the taste of beer. It is being done to save money, and if that is your goal in producing something you are going to end up with a lousy product.

As for box wine. It is used for parties, and helps demonstrate and hosts' comsummate lack of taste which is why it usually served at frat parties.

I went to a NZ/Aussie wine tasting sponsored by the NZ/Aussie chamber of commerce (in Tokyo) a few months back. Everyone got a can of wine to take home..... bottom line was, it was NASTY shit.

Canned wines have been around for a little while, but got a lot of press last year after The Coppola Vineyard in California (USA) introduced a canned sparkling wine 4 pack in the US in hopes of going head to head with the Bacardi bottled drinks and other sugary training alcohol for teenagers.

The wine industry is very competitive right now. Huge multinationals own a lot of the famous and mid size labels/vineyards in US and Australia now so they trying to figure out how to get more revenue by findingnew drinkers/new drinking scenarios....thus the attempt at cans.

Aluminum casings can cause a leaching out of small amounts of tin, Fe, sodium, aluminum as well as a metallic taste. Anodized aluminum can be bad even though it is non-reactive, the manufacturer refuses to inform consumers what electrically charged chemicals are used to alter the aluminum's molecular structure. What next canned pasta, cans of milk ? get your canned-artificial-goodness with that biting aluminum/tin aftertaste? Some say canned foods which contain a strng metallic taste can be dangerous

Wine in a can? ... or an aluminium bottle, perhaps.

I can't remember the last time I saw a cask but I do recall that, as kids, their inner bladders were perfect for overnight hiking.

ImageImage

Empty, they would crumple up to almost nothing in size but could be partly inflated and stuffed inside a coat to use as a comfy pillow or (most importantly) be used to carry 4 litres of water at a time from the nearest river back to camp for cooking & cleaning.

Here's to you, Mr-4-litre-wine-cask-bladder-maker. :romance:
