Privately held Japanese beverage group Suntory Holdings is close to a deal to buy soft drink maker Orangina from its private equity owners Blackstone Group and Lion Capital, a source familiar with the situation said on Wednesday. The Wall Street Journal earlier reported the news, saying that the price is likely to exceed the $2.6 billion that Blackstone and Lion Capital paid for it in 2006.

Japanese beer and soft drink giant Kirin said on Monday it had terminated months-long merger talks with its smaller rival Suntory that had aimed to create a top industry player in Asia. "Kirin Holdings Company Limited, which has been in merger negotiations with Suntory Holdings Limited, today announced that the negotiations have been terminated," Kirin said, citing disagreement on whether to list the company.
