What? Why? Then what next? Asahi and Sapporo merging together to combat the evil empire? Where are the anti-trust laws? This is like Ford merging with Chrysler. Oh well, this is TIJ. As long as happoshu won't rule the free world, I am OK.

Reuters: Suntory close to buying Orangina
Privately held Japanese beverage group Suntory Holdings is close to a deal to buy soft drink maker Orangina from its private equity owners Blackstone Group and Lion Capital, a source familiar with the situation said on Wednesday. The Wall Street Journal earlier reported the news, saying that the price is likely to exceed the $2.6 billion that Blackstone and Lion Capital paid for it in 2006.

The biz news broadcaster for NHK's world service Newsline TV program had this exact problem on the newscast yesterday, starting out saying 'orange-gyn-a' but shortly shifted to the more correct 'orange-ge-na'

Orangina... mangina...

Man, this is what you get when gaishikei companies in Japan hire only the locals with their poor limited Engrish skills. Gaishikei companies need to bring in the big guns from their headquarters back home to run their operations.

Actually, the biz guy, Ron Madison sounds to be US import... I think it is just he isn't the smoothest presenter and/or the copy that is being fed into his teleprompter isn't all that sound...Today, on the Delta-J.A.L. story, he started out saying 'J.A.L.' but midway shifted to saying 'JAL' and then went back to saying "J.A.L."

The Yomiuri is reporting (Japanese) that the merger talks have broken up.

EDIT: In English:

Japan's Kirin terminates merger talks with Suntory
Japanese beer and soft drink giant Kirin said on Monday it had terminated months-long merger talks with its smaller rival Suntory that had aimed to create a top industry player in Asia. "Kirin Holdings Company Limited, which has been in merger negotiations with Suntory Holdings Limited, today announced that the negotiations have been terminated," Kirin said, citing disagreement on whether to list the company. A combined group would have been be the largest in the Japanese beer and soft drink markets with sales of more than 400 billion dollars -- ahead of Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev and Coca-Cola Co. of the United States...more...
